Head of School Greatest Achievement Prize

For annual award to the student in the final year of the MEng programme with outstanding performance in the MEng degree overall.

Amelia Bryant

In her Master's Project, Amelia designed and manufactured a novel biofidelic human headform for testing instrumented mouthguards. Instrumented mouthguards are used increasingly in sports to measure head kinematics and guide brain injury assessments. However, so far it has not been possible to evaluate the accuracy of their measurements. This project delivered the first prototype of a new headform that has a mandible and muscles that mimic human mandibular motion and relaxed and clenched status. This is the first headform that provides these capabilities, paving the way for measuring the accuracy of instrumented mouthguards under representative lab test conditions. This project required a complex range of knowledge and skills, including head injury biomechanics, CAD and finite element modelling, additive manufacturing, material characterisation and impact testing. The impressive coordination between these transdisciplinary elements led to the development of this unique headform prototype.

Governors' MEng Prize in Design Engineering For annual award to the student of greatest merit in the final undergraduate year of the MEng course.

Amy Walter

In her Master's Project, Amy has undertaken an exceptionally ambitious initiative focused on enhancing the delivery of humanitarian aid programs. Her extensive research delves deeply into the complexities of humanitarian aid, tracing its historical evolution and assessing its current state within the prevailing political climate.

Amy's project reflects a profound commitment to understanding and improving the practical realities faced by humanitarian practitioners. Her dedication and perseverance are evident in the innovative solutions she has developed, which promise to significantly impact the effectiveness of humanitarian aid delivery. Her work not only exemplifies academic excellence but also addresses a critical need in the humanitarian sector.
